Ruth Chapters 1 & 2

This week we will study the first 2 chapters of Ruth.
I love the book of Ruth. Several things stand out for me in this story:
- Ruth was not a Jew. She was a Moabite, but when she committed herself to accept the God of Israel as her God, God blessed her.
- Ruth was totally devoted to her mother-in-law even though it would appear she had nothing to gain from this relationship.
- Boaz was a redeemer who became an ancestor of David the deliverer of Israel and Jesus the redeemer of the world.
The message for us is
- God will accept anyone from any background who accepts Jesus as their Savior.
- A life devoted to others is noticed by God.
- We all need a redeemer. Jesus is our redeemer.
May God richly bless you this week.

  1. So, why would a daughter-in-law choose to stay with her dead husbands mom over her own family? Was there something in Naomi that Ruth was drawn to? Perhaps her relationship with God, and Ruth would rather be around Naomi and the light she had, then her own family? Ruth was committed to Naomi, and once in Bethlehem, Ruth was committed and industrious. I would assume that a gleaner was a lower position in this culture, but Ruth embraced this role to provide for Naomi and herself, and did it with an attitude that attracted attention. Perhaps there was something in Ruth, after being with Naomi that was starting to shine through....

  2. Rod,

My thought is the Truth trumps family. I think of the folks from the middle east who follow Christ. They know that they are leaving there family behind (or in cases when they go home, some forfiet their life). Ruth came to understand the truth of the living God, and family became a distant second.
